As someone who calls the Maldives her home, collecting shells, using them to decorate every day pieces like boxes, frames and making jewelry with it has always been a part of my most treasured memories. And as it turns out, shell jewelry has become a major summer trend elsewhere in the world.

Prada men’s spring summer 2018 show debuted the trend with chunky shell necklaces, they also made an appearance at Miuccia Prada’s womenswear autumn winter 2017 collection, as mismatching bangles in clashing colors. Other designers who took up the trend were Rosie Assoulin, who presented delicate drop shell earrings and Dolce & Gabbana who went all out with shell embellished earrings and mermaid crowns. Besides the runway, shell adorned jewelry is seen on sites like Net-a-Porter or Matches Fashion, proving that plenty of shoppable options are available.
While you don’t have to spend too much to get involved, the key is to avoid cheap-looking pieces and opt for those in gold or silver. You could choose more organic-looking combinations like shells on woven cords or layer the rest of your wrist jewelry with a colorful friendship bracelet adorned with shells. Mismatching shell earrings is another look that is equally modern and unique.
